Key Moments

Reflecting

Week 9 Post 1

One change that I had made at the beginning of my project was the conflict in my film. At first, I was going to have both an interaction and injury to depict the under representations of girls. After some discussion, I decided on just using an interaction between another character to show this. The interaction itself had also changed many times. I was conflicted on what I should show. I wanted it to be simple and get the point across. At first, I was going to have the character not be able to get involved in a game with boy characters, but unfortunately, I did not have enough people to do this.

Another change was that at first, I wanted to include the character looking out onto the ice, which was filled with just boys, which I thought would be very effective, and still think it would have. Unfortunately, like I had previously explained, the ice was being renovated and I could not do this.

I was very thankful and extremely happy with being able to use the synthetic ice, as there were no people to interrupt the project and sound. I was happy because the lighting was also good.

I had a lot of fun with this project and hope whoever views it enjoys!

CCR Script and Editing

Writing and Editing CCR

Week 8 Post 3

Here is what my "script" looks like before going through and making it into an actual script. Right now, it is just all my information gathered up...

I have pictures too, but they are not loading.

I also have a Word Document for my references which I plan on putting at the end of the video.

How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?

When this project was introduced to us, I knew that I wanted it to have a purpose. I wanted to use my love for the game and issues that girls may face. The representation of gender is my focus, and I hope that the elements of my film add to this. Acting, camera techniques, and mise-en-scene will add to this.

Representation is often known as an image of something. This is to imply a visual component to this act. In terms of minority groups, such as women, people of color, all non-normative sexualities, the issue of representation is one that many film theorists and filmmaker’s struggle to contend with.
For minorities, representation relies on the roles of size and power. The size of a minority group is an important component that plays a role in shaping the experiences of minority group members.

The first game of women's hockey in the United States was recorded around 1920. The period of women's hockey history in North America peaked in the 1930s, which soon disappeared with World War II. Ice hockey was seen as a men-only sport in the post-war era.

Ice hockey is now a sport for everyone. In fact, more and more female players have joined the game in the past two decades and numbers are still increasing. Between the years of 2007 and 2018, the number of registers female players in the world had gone from 156,665 to 205,674. Women's teams can be found in North America, Europe, Asia, Oceania, Africa, and Latin America.

Girls' hockey is one of the fastest-growing youth sports in the United States. In 2018-2019, almost 83,000 girls and women had participated in the sport. Girls' hockey has increased about 34% in the past 10 years.

The National Hockey League (NHL) currently has a "Hockey is for Everyone" campaign, in which they state that "We support any teammate, coach or fan who brings heart, energy and passion to the rink. We believe all hockey programs - from professionals to youth organization - should provide a safe, positive and inclusive environment for players and families regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender identity or expression, disability, sexual orientation and socio-economic status.

I love this sport and have ever since I started playing. Being a girl had never set back my mindset and motivation to keep playing. I have always, and still do, played in a team with boys, except for a few teams of all girls. Luckily, none of them have been anything but supportive of me on their team. When I played on the team with all the girls, we still played against the boys' teams, and still did very well in the league. One of my teams was highlighted on Sports Extra, a few years back. This was such a cool experience, as I was interviewed for the first time and even scored in the game! I hope that women continue to prosper in hockey as they are today.

After researching, I learned that a sports film is a type of film genre where sports is the theme. The production includes a sport, sporting event, athletes, etc. These aspects are made significant or the main topic of the film. In these types of movies, sports fans are not necessarily the target audience, but tend to be a large majority. In these films, the outcomes usually vary from the protagonist winning the championship or large event, or loses, and then searches or enlightenment. Traditionally, these movies may include romance, injuries, a social obstacle, and an action-oriented climax. From the opening of my film, a minor injury and social obstacle will stand as part of the film.

Some sports films are very well known and respected. For example, Raging BullRockyCreedRudy, and one of my personal favorites, MiracleMiracle is also a hockey film, that is based on Team USA, the underdogs, beating the Soviet's in the 1980 Winter Olympics, leading to a Gold Medal. More information about these films can be found below.

The inclusion of 'drama' comes from the conflict between the main character and another character, which will be shown at the start. Character vs. character will be directly depicted, while character vs. society would be intended if the film were to continue. Society comes from the stereotype that people have of women in hockey. A character vs. self-conflict could also come into play, as the character may face self-doubt and overcome obstacles in her head.

How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text?

Considering my film to be a sports drama, my target audience are most likely athletes, or an underrepresented minority in sports, which in hockey, is girls. Although sports films can be viewed by any age, I think that my film targets more teenagers and young adults. I think that many people in this day of age are really focused on feminism and integrating women into male dominated aspects of life. Because of this, my film will be geared towards females, but also the hockey community. For people interested in sports, this would also be a film that would interest them. I feel that many athletes are interested in sports movies, therefore, a sports genre would be more appealing.

To make my film available to the public, I would have to think sensibly. Obviously, my film would not just end up on the big screen movie theater. Considering my target audience, it would be a good idea to have the film be played at ice hockey rinks. With this, the film would be directed towards hockey players, which the film appeals to specifically. Using social media that the target audience is experienced with, like YouTube, Instagram, and Tik Tok, I can spread the film to a broader and less concise group of people. People can share social media posts, which would increase the audience. Using social media algorithms, which are helpful in delivering content to people that are interested in that topic, the film can find its way to the targeted group based on relevance. According to Sprout Social, “Social media algorithms are a way of sorting posts in a users’ feed based on relevancy instead of publish time.”

To expand my target audience, I can deliver my film on social media like Facebook, which has a higher age range than my anticipated audience. Statista reported that as of December 2021, the highest percentage of Facebook users is about 25-34, which is what I expected.

How did your production skills develop throughout this project?

At the beginning of the project, I really wanted my time management to be on point, but time caught up with me and I was super stressed while filming because so much kept going wrong.  I think that if I had the time to film earlier and not over Spring Break, it would have been better, but that was not the case. Luckily it all worked out.

One specific thing that I noticed about myself throughout this process was that my ideas change constantly. This is a good and bad thing, as it gave me more ideas, but also because I am indecisive, I had trouble deciding on certain ideas.

Blogging was a great way to express my feelings and ideas about my film. I had never blogged before and honestly really enjoyed it, it kind of felt like a diary that other people could read.

In class we had the opportunity to meet with other students to discuss our projects and receive feedback/advice. This was super helpful, and I think that everyone in the group had gained something from the meeting. The groups were random, but we all worked and discussed well together.

I presented my project first. I explained the basics in a simple way so that everyone could understand. Since I have not been filmed yet, I could not reflect on that aspect, like other group members were able to do. They liked the idea and thought that focusing on sound was important. They also thought that I should not use music if I do not need to, because the sound would be important. I had also told them the title of my film, which they liked. With this, I asked them when they thought I should put the title, beginning or end? They thought beginning.

The questions that they had were where I was filming and how I would work around being in a public place. The ice rink I am planning to film at has early morning opportunities to skate, which are usually less crowded, which I am lowkey dreading LOL.

Overall, this experience was very helpful for my group and I, as well as a great way to see the progress everyone else has made!

How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware, and online – in this project?

One major online technology that was utilized so much was blogging. Blogger was the website used and not only, like I said before, was it a great way to express my ideas, but it kept me organized for my film, allowed me to plan accordingly, and have research on different aspects that I needed. Using blogging as a tool was super successful, in my opinion, and without it, a lot of different aspects of leading up to production would have been different.

The issue here is that I do not actually have a real camera. Using an iPhone for this may be difficult and maybe even blurry. If I can try to find a real camera, that would be awesome, if not the iPhone 11 will have to work.

Before this class, the only editing I have done was on iMovie. At the beginning of the school year, we were given the name of a free editing software, DaVinci Resolve. When I first opened it, I was overwhelmed with all the different sections, dropdown bars, and names of things I have never heard of. I explored a little and edited my first piece of the school year, which was our 'One Word' project. We were given one work and had to depict it using no words, just visuals. When editing, I just had to merge the clips together, shorten them, and tighten them if needed. Although this sounds simple, it took me quite a while. Knowing this, I know I need time to really focus on editing this film.

DaVinci Resolve's website restates the following... "DaVinci Resolve is the world's only solution that combines editing, color correction, visual effects, motion graphics and audio postproduction all in one software too! Its elegant, modern interface is fast to learn and easy enough for new users, yet powerful for professionals. DaVinci Resolve lets you work faster and at a higher quality because you don’t have to learn multiple apps or switch software for different tasks. That means you can work with camera original quality images throughout the entire process. It’s like having your own postproduction studio in a single app! Best of all, by learning DaVinci Resolve, you’re learning how to use the exact same tools used by Hollywood professionals!"

Within my film opening, I utilized different camera shots to serve different purposes within the video. I created a shot list to show this.

First, I did some research on what a shot list was.

A shot list is a document that maps out what will take place in a film, or video, that describes each shot within the film or video. It creates a checklist for the project by forming a sense of direction and preparation for the film crew.

What goes into a shot list?

  • - Brief description of shot/characters

  • - Scene number/shot number

  • - Shot type

  • - Camera angle

  • - Camera movement

  • - Camera equipment

  • - Framing (aspect ratio)

  • - Location

  • - Setup times

  • - Sometimes audio notes, or prop mentions

I created this on excel, which I was not very familiar with, but I knew that I would be able to make a chart using this online tool.
